Chatham Downtown Neighborhoods

Chatham began as a naval Dockyard in the 1790's as it lies on the banks of the Lower Thames River. In the early 19th century Chatham-Kent was part of the Famous Underground Railway. Uncle Tom's Cabin near Dresden was the destination of many of the slaves who escaped from the United States. As a result, Chatham-Kent is now part of the African-Canadian Heritage Tour. Chatham has its roots in Agriculture which is still very evident on the outskirts of town. You can see many farms where crops of all kinds, and fruits and vegetables abound. The City of Chatham is also very rooted in the Automotive Industry being the home of Gray-Dort Motors Ltd. one of the earliest Automotive Manufacturers and birthplace of Walter P. Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler Corporation. Today, Chatham-Kent is know as the Classic Car Capital of Canada. It is home to RM Classic Car, a world Renown Company that restores Antique and Classic cars from around the world. Many of the Historic Homes in the Downtown Area reflect the earlier beginnings of the City of Chatham. Another example of the charm and magnetic pull of Chatham-Kent!
