'Acceptional Riders is a charitable therapeutic riding program for children thru adults with disabilities, to learn horsemanship and riding skills.' This is off the website of TJ Stables in Chatham-Kent.The program has been running since 1992 at  the 50 acre Horse Farm, 837 Gregory Drive East in Chatham.

My wife and I were out at TJ Stable recently for our grandson's rodeo, the finally to a week at horse camp. Terry spoke to the audience about the Acceptional Riders program and we decided to investigate further. I had heard about the calming effects these beautiful animals can have on human beings especially if the have special needs On the TJ Stables website, it is described as "a registered charity for physically and developmentally challenged individuals to learn horsemanship and riding skills. Currently there are over 150 riders participating in this therapeutic riding program ranging in age from four years old through adult. The program is designed for individuals with physical and developmental challenges. Riders learn horsemanship and riding skills. Horseback riding is widely recognized as a beneficial form of therapeutic recreation.

The program runs with trained volunteers, sometimes as many as 3 per rider. There are 2 eight week sessions in April and September and no rider is refused. If an individual cannot afford the program, Terry and her husband absorb the cost. The next session starts on Sept 17/19  and Terry told me they were short funds for 4 riders. My wife and I have decided to help support this great program and after mentioning it to several people who were unaware even of its existence, I decided to help make people aware of the situation. Volunteers are also always needed. Check out the new website to volunteer or donate.

Chatham-Kent is a giving community. So many individuals generously support the various programs that take place in Chatham-Kent. Why not make this cause one of those that benefits from that great community generosity.
